Is sex outside of marriage sin?

It is very clear that the Bible condemns adultery and sexual immorality (or fornication). So is sex outside of marriage considered as sexually immoral and fornication? According to 1 Corinthians 7:2, the answer is clearly “yes”: “Nevertheless, [to avoid] fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband..” Paul states that marriage is a solution for sexual immorality. Paul was saying that because people cannot control themselves and so many are having immoral sex outside of marriage, people should rather get married. Sex between a husband and a wife is not immoral.

Again in 1 Corinthians 7:9 he says: “But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn.” In other words, Paul advises those who have undue difficulty in keeping their sexual desires under control, to marry rather than be constantly subjected to the excitement of unsatisfied desire. Of course, there should be many other factors considered before marrying. Being single and celibate is preferable to an unsuitable marriage!

So Because 1 Corinthians 7:2, 9 includes sex outside of marriage in the definition of sexual immorality, all of the Bible verses that condemn sexual immorality as being sinful also condemn sex outside of marriage as sinful. Thus there are many Bible passages that declare sex outside of marriage to be a sin: (Acts 15:20; 1 Corinthians 5:1; 6:13, 18; 10:8; 2 Corinthians 12:21; Galatians 5:19; Ephesians 5:3; Colossians 3:5; 1 Thessalonians 4:3; Jude 7). It has never been God’s plan for people to have sex outside of marriage.

Marriage [is] honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge. Hebrews 13:4 If this Bible truth was followed, and people stayed away from sex outside of marriage, then there would be far fewer sexually transmitted diseases, far fewer abortions, far fewer unwed mothers and unwanted pregnancies, and far fewer children growing up without both parents in their lives. Abstinence is God’s only policy when it comes to sex before marriage. The Bible is clear that sex outside of marriage is a sin. And like every other sin, God can give forgiveness to the person who repents and turns away from living in sin. Listen to the lesson entitled “Free from sin”. Amen.
