Where do different languages come from?
The Bible makes it clear in Genesis 11:1 that “the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.” So how did it change? Genesis 11 gives us the answer.
In Genesis 11 the people were united in something that was not for God’s glory – they wanted to make a name for themselves according to Genesis 11:4. Although God had explicitly commanded in Genesis 9 that they should replenish and fill the earth, they decided to build a big city and tower. God saw that one universal language enabled the entire planet to be united – even in evil.
So what did God do?
Gen 11:7-9 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.”
So where do different languages come from? God is the One who made different languages in Genesis 11, and the effects of God’s action can still be seen till this very day.
