Is it a sin to swear or curse?
The Bible makes it very clear that it is indeed a sin to swear or curse.
Ephesians 4:29 tell us, “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
1 Peter 3:10 For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:
James 3:9-11 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?
James is basically saying what Jesus also taught: what comes out of our mouths is what which fills our hearts. When the heart is evil, sooner or later, it will show through the words. But when our hearts belong to God then our mouths will be filled with praise for Him and love for others. Believers do not praise God on one hand, and curse on the other.
Luke 6:45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.
When we swear or curse, we are giving evidence of the polluting sin in our hearts. If you struggle with swearing and cursing, and desire to be free, please listen to my series entitled “living by faith”. Our God “is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” and our speech will reflect the new heart that God has created within us.
