1001 – How can you still be sure that Jesus is coming back?
The Bible talks about wars, famines, earthquakes and many horrors. We are seeing them happen, and yet Jesus is not here. How can you still bel sure that Jesus is coming back?
First of all, I believe that it is important to remember what Jesus said in Matthew 24:36 “But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.”
But that is not all that Jesus said. In that very same chapter of Matthew, chapter 24:32-33 he said, “Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh; So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.”
So even though we will not be able to know exactly when Jesus will come back, there are certain signs that He has given us that will indicate that His coming is near. Now the question states that we have been seeing earthquakes, famines, wars, and so on but still Christ is not returning. And this is true! But it is important to remember that the earthquakes, famines, wars and other calamities that we are experiencing are increasing in frequency and also intensity. Just as a pregnant woman starts experiencing more cramps and pains the closer she gets to the birth of her child, so our planet is experiencing more frequent and intense calamities as we are approaching the end of this world.
How can we still believe that Jesus is coming back? It is actually simple. We believe it, because Christ promised it. John 14:2-3 “In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” Christ has promised that He will return to receive us unto Himself. There is a lesson on my YouTube channel entitled “102 – What is Faith?” where we can clearly see that it is impossible for God to lie because His Word has creative power. And so if Jesus has promised that He will return, then we can be sure that He will return, simply because He said so. We can take Him at His Word.
But do you know that God has already told us that people will start to mock and doubt Christ’s return? In 2 Peter 3:3-4 the Bible says, “Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.” God said that people scoffing and mocking at Christ’s return will be one of the signs of the last days. When you hear more and more people scoffing and mocking then you should know which days we are living in – the last days. These people who are scoffing and mocking are actually busy confirming the truthfulness of God’s Word, because He has told us that they would do so.
But then in the next couple of verses God explains to us why there might seem to be a delay. 2 Peter 3:9-10 “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.” God wants to give all an opportunity to accept or reject the gospel. The Holy Spirit will work through converted men and women to share the gospel message to the world and give all an opportunity to repent, and then Christ will come as a thief in the night – He will come when people do not expect it. Let us be converted men and women today that God can use us to take His gospel message to the world.
